Sustainable Buildings Canada

Executive Director

Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2003 by leaders in Canada’s sustainable building movement. For more than 20 years, we have worked to advance high-performance, low-carbon, and healthy buildings. We do this by connecting designers, builders, operators, policymakers, and educators across the country.

Our mission is to bring together communities of learners, practitioners, and leaders. We create opportunities for people to collaborate and share practical solutions that improve Canada’s built environment. Through this work, we support healthier spaces, lower energy and water use, greater use of clean and renewable energy, and better outcomes for the people who use and operate buildings.

We are committed to a practical, independent, and collaborative approach. We focus on solutions that show how meaningful progress can be made in creating a more sustainable built environment in Canada.

SBC is at an important stage in its development. As we look toward a net-positive future, we must strengthen and diversify the funding that supports our work. At a time when Canada faces urgent climate, economic, and housing challenges, the role we play is increasingly important.

We now seek a new Executive Director (ED) to help lead us into this exciting future. The Executive Director will provide strategic and hands-on executive and operational leadership. They will help set direction and ensure the effective execution of our strategy. This role calls for a leader who is personally engaged in our programs, partnerships, and sector activities.  The ED will lead and integrate our small internal team and broad network of collaborators to deliver our organizational priorities. The Executive Director will work closely with our Board Chair and Directors to ensure strong governance, transparency, accountability, and mission alignment.

The successful candidate will bring leadership experience and a strong understanding of the sustainable buildings sector. They will help strengthen SBC’s work in key areas that can have the greatest impact on Canada’s built environment, while also deepening our presence in the regions where we are already active.  As part of this work, the Executive Director will help expand our reach and diversify our sources of funding.

The new Executive Director will be strongly committed to social and environmental sustainability. They will take a broad, systems-level view that recognizes the connections between climate, community, industry, and the built environment.

This person will be both a strategist and a doer, someone who can communicate a clear long-term vision while also taking a hands-on approach to getting the work done.

Why Join SBC

  • Lead a respected national organization at an important moment of renewal
  • Shape the future of sustainable buildings in Canada
  • Work with a committed Board and an engaged national community
